Loughton Stroke Club
(Affiliated to The Stroke Association)
The Loughton Stroke Club was formed in 1978 as a result of a lunch time conversation in the staff room of St. Margaret's Hospital Rehabilitation Unit. It was felt that large numbers of patients who had suffered strokes were left in limbo after being discharged home and consequently regressed.
It was obvious that something needed to be done, and what better than to approach the Loughton Council of Churches (now Churches Together in Loughton)? It was clear that our church would prove a suitable venue with access for wheelchairs and other facilities.
An early newspaper article reads as follows: - 'A Stroke Club is shortly to be opened in Loughton under the auspices of the Council of Churches. It will be manned by volunteers with professional backing and its aim will be to provide a relaxed social setting for stroke victims and their nearest relatives and in particular to help those suffering from speech defects' . . . .
Since its inception the records show that over 163 families with one or more stroke victims have been in membership with scores of others being given advice and support. In addition over 150 individuals have helped in a variety of ways. The majority of these being drawn from various churches in the area.
Our parent body is the Stroke Association with close links maintained at a national and regional level. We are also linked to Voluntary Action for Epping Forest (V.A.E.F.), social services and the statuary bodies.
The Loughton Stroke Club meets for social activities on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month at 2.00 pm.
